An inspirational woman with an incredible passion – that’s what comes to mind when thinking of Alexis DeLuca of The Novel Baker. Her business name stems from the combination of her two loves; baking and English. Alexis has a degree in writing and another in literature. She reminisces, “When I was a little girl, my nose was always in a book. On the rare occasion that it wasn’t, I was by my mother’s side in the kitchen, falling in love with baking.” Alexis has not taken any formal baking classes and runs The Novel Baker on her own. Everything she learns comes from cookbooks or online research. She’s a true testament to the adage: you can do anything you put your mind to.
When asked if she has advice for bakers, Alexis emphasizes that in order to be successful you must love what you do. “From the minute I take out the butter to soften and crack the first egg, to placing the finished cake into the CakeSafe- I find it a cathartic, beautiful process with the finished product bringing such joy to my client’s life.” She also wants new bakers to know that owning a baking studio entails much more than just baking. In fact, the majority of your time will be spent doing other tasks. Alexis adores wearing the many hats of an entrepreneur, and most of the tasks involved – except washing dishes, which she loathes!
Alexis says that the most intense part of owning a baking studio is delivering multi-tiered cakes and cupcakes. She now owns 3 CakeSafes and a CupCakeSafe, and her “life is so much easier. Now I no longer upset everyone on the road by driving 20 miles under the speed limit; hands clenched around the steering wheel yelling out the window: ‘I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!’ while signaling people to go around… go around!”. She is totally relaxed on deliveries these days. She zips around the roads without a care in the world.
The Novel Baker is growing and will soon move out of Alexis’s home where it’s been for 3 years. The business will occupy a baking studio in Perkasie, PA. Alexis calls it an “amazing adventure” and couldn’t be more thrilled that her business is booming. It goes to show that if you love what you do, success will follow.
