We enjoyed getting to know Kristine from Sifted Baking Co., and we know you will too! Read our interview with her below to learn about her first year of business ownership, her favorite flavors of the moment, and more.
For most of my life I have been baking. My childhood was spent in the kitchen with my mom making different desserts and testing recipes. When I took off for college, I initially studied Photojournalism. Then switched majors to study Psychology where I finished my degree and then changed my mind again. I have always been artsy and creative and baking became the perfect balance for me. Decorating cakes became my art. I started culinary school in 2014 at Alfred State College where I graduated from the Baking, Production, and Management program!
What is your favorite part of owning your own business?
Before starting Sifted Baking Co. I never dreamed of owning a business. It was not something that crossed my mind. When job hunting one day, I contacted a well known local cake artist hoping she would hire me to work with her. Instead she guided me through starting my own business. She offered to share her space with me, where she continues to be my friend and cake partner in crime. My favorite part of owning Sifted has been learning the business from someone who I admire and sharing the successes and failures with. I have been so fortunate to have such a strong support system.
Fall flavors are where I thrive! Maple Praline, Cinnamon Salted Caramel, and Pumpkin everything!
Now that it's been almost a full year of owning Sifted Baking Co. (congratulations!), what advice would you give yourself when you were just starting out?
This past year flew by! I feel like all of the pieces have fallen into place from the time I filed for my DBA to where I am today. Just starting out, I would tell myself that this is where I should be. That it’s a huge step but you will grow and change so much. I would say to myself not to stress about the little things because it will all work out.
My first cake disaster came on a 100 degree day, delivering to a venue less than 5 minutes away from the cake studio. In that short time, my buttercream cake collapsed in on itself. It was that day that CakeSafe changed my life. I NEVER wanted something like that to happen again. I wanted every delivery to be a success no matter the conditions. CakeSafe eliminates the stress of deliveries. I can drive like a normal person and not worry about taking corners too sharp. I no longer have a train of cars behind me because I’m driving like a 90 year old!
